Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, on Tuesday completed the screening process of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in Abuja.
Obi arrived at the party’s national secretariat where he was screened by a committee led by former Governor Sam Egwu during an exercise that lasted over two hours.
Addressing journalists after the screening, Obi dismissed speculations that he had already emerged as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, insisting that the process remained transparent and democratic.
He explained that the party made its expression of interest forms available to all aspirants and noted that he was currently the only individual who had formally declared interest in the race.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate commended the NDC leadership for following due process, describing the conduct of the screening exercise as a demonstration of internal democracy.
Reacting to reports linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to the contest, Obi said his focus remained on offering practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges rather than speculating about potential opponents.
He stated that his vision for the country centres on national unity, security, economic growth and inclusive governance anchored on the constitutional principle of federal character.
Obi further stressed the need to create a safer Nigeria where citizens can travel freely without fear and parents can feel secure about the safety of their children.
He also pledged to confront poverty, hunger and corruption, maintaining that public resources should be deployed to improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians rather than serve private interests.
