The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has unveiled an ambitious nationwide tree planting campaign aimed at planting 1,000 trees within a single hour across multiple locations in Nigeria, in a bold push to advance environmental sustainability and grassroots climate action.
The initiative, scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., is being executed under the COWA Green Borders sustainability drive and reflects the association’s growing commitment to community-driven environmental advocacy and ecosystem restoration.
Designed as a coordinated national exercise, the campaign will mobilise stakeholders, volunteers, community members, and environmental advocates to designated planting sites across the country, where simultaneous tree planting activities will take place within the one-hour window. Beyond achieving the numerical target, the initiative is intended to galvanise collective action against pressing environmental challenges such as deforestation, climate change, and land degradation.
In an official signed statement, the National President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, described the initiative as both symbolic and impactful, emphasising its role in fostering a culture of shared environmental responsibility.
She stated that the campaign goes beyond tree planting to represent a broader call to action aimed at securing a healthier and more sustainable future for communities across Nigeria.
“If we are to secure a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities, we must all recognise that environmental stewardship is a shared duty. This initiative is not simply about planting trees; it is about planting hope, restoring our environment and inspiring a culture of responsibility that can endure for generations,” she said.
Mrs Adeniyi further noted that the campaign aligns with COWA’s overarching sustainability vision of integrating environmental action with community development and citizen engagement.
She explained that the “1,000 Trees in One Hour” initiative demonstrates the impact of collective purpose, combining immediate ecological benefits with long-term awareness creation, particularly among younger generations.
“The ‘1,000 Trees in One Hour’ campaign shows what can be achieved when people come together with purpose. It is both symbolic and practical. While the trees we plant today will contribute to environmental restoration, the awareness we are creating will help nurture environmentally conscious citizens, especially among younger generations,” she added.
According to her, the initiative is designed to evolve into a sustained movement that promotes environmental consciousness as a way of life, while encouraging partnerships, local ownership, and nationwide participation in sustainability programmes.
“Our vision is to make environmental consciousness a way of life in our communities. Through the Green Borders initiative, we want to encourage partnerships, inspire local ownership and build a nationwide movement where sustainability is driven not only by policy, but by people,” she stated.
The campaign is also expected to stimulate broader conversations around environmental protection, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, and expand support for future interventions under the Green Borders framework.
With this initiative, COWA reinforces its role as a key player in community-based environmental advocacy, while highlighting the critical contributions of citizens, particularly women and young people, in safeguarding Nigeria’s environmental future.
