The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and the military as part of efforts to promote national security, unity, and renewed hope for a more stable and prosperous Nigeria.
The call was made during an Easter programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life.” The CDS was ably represented at the event by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Micheal Onoja, who delivered the message on his behalf.
Addressing participants, Major General Onoja commended the NUJ for organising the Easter gathering, noting that the theme of the programme reflects the enduring values of faith, resilience, and renewal required to strengthen unity and inspire collective progress in the country.
According to him, the Easter celebration carries profound spiritual and national significance, describing it as the cornerstone of the Christian faith and a reminder of the triumph of hope over despair.
“Easter remains the foundation of the Christian faith. The resurrection of Jesus Christ represents victory of life over death, truth over falsehood, and hope over despair,” he said.
He explained that the message of Easter resonates strongly with Nigeria’s present realities, stressing that despite the nation’s security and economic challenges, the country remains resilient and capable of renewal through unity, faith, and shared commitment to national development.
“At a time when our nation is confronted with various challenges, the message of Easter reminds us that renewal is always possible when we remain united, hopeful, and committed to the ideals that bind us together as a people,” he stated.
The CDS also praised the dedication and sacrifices of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that troops continue to confront terrorism, banditry, and other security threats across different theatres of operation.
“Our gallant troops remain steadfast in their duty to defend the nation. Through their sacrifices and dedication, we have continued to record progress in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other threats to national security,” the message read.
He added that the sustained efforts of the Armed Forces have contributed to restoring relative peace in several communities previously affected by insecurity, allowing displaced persons to gradually return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
“Through the ongoing operations of the Armed Forces, normalcy is gradually being restored in many communities. Displaced persons are returning home, and economic and social activities are beginning to flourish once again,” he noted.
Major General Onoja also highlighted the critical role of the media in shaping national discourse and strengthening public confidence in national institutions, emphasizing that responsible journalism is essential in countering misinformation and promoting national unity.
“The media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception. Accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting helps counter misinformation and strengthens public trust in national institutions,” he said.
He urged media practitioners, particularly members of the NUJ, to continue to uphold professionalism and contribute to nation-building by promoting narratives that foster unity, peace, and national cohesion.
The CDS further stressed that national security is a shared responsibility that requires the support and cooperation of all citizens, religious organisations, community leaders, and the media.
“National security is not the responsibility of the Armed Forces alone. It requires the collective commitment of every Nigerian to promote peace, reject divisive narratives, and support efforts aimed at strengthening national unity,” he stated.
He also paid tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of the country, while calling for continued prayers for Nigeria and for the men and women of the Armed Forces serving on various operational fronts.
“We honour the memory of our fallen heroes whose sacrifices continue to inspire us. We also urge Nigerians to keep our troops in their prayers as they work tirelessly to safeguard the peace and stability of our nation,” he added.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Armed Forces to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its citizens, the CDS expressed optimism that the country would continue to move towards greater peace, stability, and prosperity.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians, particularly members of the Christian community, a peaceful and hopeful Easter celebration.
