Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, have successfully foiled coordinated attacks by ISWAP fighters on multiple military locations across Borno State, reinforcing their hold on strategic positions in the region.
The attempted assaults, which occurred in the early hours of March 16, 2026, targeted troop locations at Njimtilo, Baga, Buratai and Damboa. The террорист fighters reportedly launched the attacks from different directions in what military authorities described as a desperate effort to overrun defensive positions and gain propaganda advantage.
In a statement signed by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, troops at Ajiri Cross near Njimtilo detected the advancing insurgents early and responded with a well-coordinated counteraction. The troops, who had anticipated the movement, adopted a deliberate offensive-defensive posture, deploying coordinated firepower and tactical manoeuvres that disrupted the атакers and cut off their withdrawal routes.
The military said the insurgents were forced into a disorganised retreat after suffering significant casualties. Similar attacks in Baga, Buratai and Damboa were also repelled, with troops bringing superior firepower to bear on the attackers.
The operations were further bolstered by close air support from the Nigerian Air Force component and Nigerian Army Aviation, whose precision strikes targeted fleeing террорист elements and disrupted their assault formations.
During the engagements, several insurgents were neutralised, including a key commander who led the attack on Buratai, while others escaped with injuries. Despite the intensity of the clashes, which left some personnel wounded and equipment damaged, troops maintained firm control of all the targeted locations.
Following the encounters, troops carried out exploitation operations around Baga, extending to Korochara and Garin Giwa towards the Gidan Kaje axis. During the mop-up operations, a cache of weapons and equipment was recovered, including PKT machine guns, AK-47 rifles, ammunition, rocket-propelled grenade bombs, magazines, and other military gear. Troops also destroyed motorcycles used by the insurgents.
The military further disclosed that seven террорист bodies were recovered, while about 20 others were reportedly buried in shallow graves by their fleeing comrades.
Operation Hadin Kai said the failed attacks reflect increasing pressure on insurgent groups operating in the North East, noting that recent sustained offensives have significantly degraded their capabilities and restricted their movement.
The task force reassured residents that all affected areas remain under full military control, while troops continue aggressive operations to track down fleeing insurgents and dismantle their remaining strongholds.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and disregard misinformation aimed at undermining ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, reiterating its commitment to restoring lasting peace and security across the region.
