The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Waidi Shaibu, has commended troops of the Nigerian Army for their courage, resilience and unwavering dedication in the ongoing fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats across the country.

The Army Chief gave the commendation on Saturday during a combined interfaith breaking of fast hosted for soldiers serving within Abuja. The event took place at the TA Lagbaja Banquet Hall and brought together personnel observing both Ramadan and Lent.

According to a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the COAS paid glowing tribute to troops deployed in various operational theatres across the country, including the North-East, North-West and North-Central regions, for their sacrifices and steadfast commitment to defending the nation.

Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that the overlapping sacred seasons of Ramadan and Lent serve as powerful reminders of sacrifice, patience, discipline and compassion—virtues that strongly reflect the professional ethos of the Nigerian soldier. He acknowledged that many troops observing these holy periods continue to carry out their duties in challenging operational environments, demonstrating remarkable dedication and patriotism.

The Army Chief stressed the importance of leadership by example and sound administration as central elements of his command philosophy, which prioritises the welfare of soldiers and the well-being of their families while strengthening morale and operational preparedness.

He urged troops to maintain the strong bonds of comradeship and the warrior ethos that define them as a professional fighting force. Shaibu also encouraged soldiers to support one another, remain resolute in the face of security challenges and continue to honour the memory of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.

Reaffirming his vision for the Nigerian Army, the COAS reiterated his commitment to transforming the Service into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment. He emphasised that improving training standards, discipline and operational readiness remains essential to achieving lasting success in ongoing military operations.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Administration (Army), Isa Abdullahi, described the gathering as a symbol of unity, mutual respect and shared purpose among soldiers of different faiths serving under one flag.

He noted that the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent reflects enduring values of sacrifice, discipline, reflection and compassion, which closely align with the demands of military service.

Major General Abdullahi added that the interfaith breaking of fast goes beyond a ceremonial event, as it strengthens fellowship and solidarity among troops irrespective of their religious backgrounds. He commended soldiers deployed across various theatres of operation for their vigilance, sacrifice and dedication, noting that their commitment embodies the spirit of endurance and selfless service required both in military duty and spiritual devotion.
