The National Police Council has formally confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), marking a significant step in the leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force.

The endorsement was announced on Monday during a council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja. The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, was convened in accordance with provisions of the Police Act 2020 requiring the Council’s consideration of such appointments.

Following the Council’s approval, Disu’s nomination will be transmitted to the Senate for screening and final confirmation.

Confirming the development, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told journalists that the Council unanimously backed Disu’s appointment as IGP.

Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity since last Wednesday after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing family reasons.

The meeting commenced at approximately 2:15 p.m. with the arrival of President Tinubu. Those in attendance included Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack; several state governors; and other senior federal officials.

The National Police Council, chaired by the President, comprises all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police.

With the Council’s endorsement secured, attention now shifts to the Senate’s confirmation process and the expectations surrounding Disu’s tenure, particularly in strengthening professionalism, operational effectiveness and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
