The Federal Government has donated over 850 customised fibre mattresses to custodial centres in Ondo State in a significant move to improve inmate welfare and advance ongoing correctional reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, formally flagged off the distribution at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akure, the Ondo State capital, describing the initiative as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to humane custody, dignity of inmates, and effective rehabilitation.
According to an official statement issued by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mary Ali, the Minister explained that Ondo State was deliberately selected as the pilot location for the nationwide distribution programme.
Represented at the event by Mr Babatunde Ogundare, Tunji-Ojo said the intervention was part of broader efforts to reposition the Nigerian Correctional Service in line with global best practices.
He said the initiative “reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to humane custody, inmate welfare, and the broader goal of rehabilitation and reintegration,” noting that improving living conditions within custodial facilities remains a critical component of sustainable correctional reforms.
The Minister emphasised that providing decent bedding materials would not only improve the physical well-being of inmates but also reinforce the government’s resolve to treat persons in custody with dignity while preparing them for productive reintegration into society.
In his remarks, the Ondo State Controller of Corrections, Mr Charles Oyewole, expressed profound appreciation to the Minister for his sustained interventions and commitment to improving conditions within correctional facilities.
Oyewole particularly acknowledged the Minister’s recent efforts in facilitating the payment of fines for some inmates, which led to their release, describing the gesture as both timely and impactful.
He said the mattresses donation would significantly enhance the welfare of inmates and boost ongoing reforms aimed at transforming custodial centres into true correctional and rehabilitation institutions.
The symbolic presentation of the fibre mattresses marks another milestone in the Federal Government’s correctional reform agenda and underscores its determination to strengthen custodial administration, promote humane treatment, and align Nigeria’s correctional system with international standards.
The intervention is part of a broader nationwide programme expected to reach correctional facilities across the country, further reinforcing the Renewed Hope Agenda’s emphasis on human dignity, institutional reform, and social reintegration.
