In a historic recognition of his exceptional contributions to regional peace, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Olufemi Oluyede, has been decorated with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel by His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone. The prestigious award was conferred during the 17th Armed Forces Day parade of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

In an official signed statement, Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that the honour acknowledges General Oluyede’s critical role in securing peace in Sierra Leone during his service under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), as well as the sacrifices of Nigerian officers and soldiers who contributed to the nation’s stability.

During the award ceremony, the citation highlighted General Oluyede’s service as Platoon Commander at the residence of the Sierra Leone Head of State between 1992 and 1994, noting his exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment, and operational excellence that advanced peace and stability in the country.

The ceremony also recognised other distinguished international figures, including former Nigerian CDS General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), Lieutenant General Daniel Opande of Kenya (rtd), Lieutenant General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura of Guinea, Major General Paul Rogers of the United States, and Brigadier General Edward Butler (rtd) of the United Kingdom.

President Bio’s address paid solemn tribute to the courage, resilience, and solidarity of the Nigerian Armed Forces, commending their steadfast commitment under ECOMOG as a frontline force in regional peace enforcement during Sierra Leone’s Civil War. The Nigerian contingent was specifically lauded for bravery, protection of civilians, and distinguished service that significantly contributed to restoring stability.

The award to General Oluyede not only celebrates his personal dedication but also underscores the enduring role of the Nigerian military in fostering peace and security across West Africa, reflecting the country’s commitment to regional cooperation and humanitarian service.
