The Consul General of the Republic of Chad in Maiduguri, Mr. Bisso Youssouf Mbodou Mbami, has called for stronger cross-border security and economic cooperation between Nigeria and Chad to address transnational crimes and insurgency threatening stability in the Lake Chad Basin region.

In an official statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Mr. Bisso made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the JTF North East, OPHK, in Maiduguri.

The Chadian envoy emphasised that closer collaboration between both nations’ armed forces was crucial to defeating Boko Haram and other criminal networks undermining regional peace. He commended the Nigerian military for its sustained resilience, professionalism, and sacrifices in ongoing counterterrorism operations, noting that the cooperation between Nigerian and Chadian troops remained a model of regional solidarity and mutual trust.

Speaking on border trade and transnational relations, the Consul General appealed for continuous dialogue to bridge communication gaps between border communities. He disclosed that the Chadian government had intensified sensitisation efforts to ensure its citizens comply with Nigeria’s trade regulations and contraband restrictions. “Mutual understanding and cooperation are key to sustaining border commerce and trust,” he stated.

In his response, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described the Republic of Chad as “a trusted brother and strategic ally” with whom Nigeria shares deep security, cultural, and historical ties. He reaffirmed the commitment of OPHK to maintaining robust cooperation under the framework of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which continues to safeguard shared borders and waterways for the benefit of both nations.

General Abubakar highlighted the importance of intelligence and information sharing to ensure effective regional security coordination. He assured the Chadian delegation that OPHK remained dedicated to protecting legitimate trade while preventing terrorists from exploiting cross-border activities. “It is our duty to protect legitimate commerce and ensure that goods and livelihoods do not fall into the hands of terrorists,” the Theatre Commander stated.

The visit also served as a platform for both sides to exchange perspectives on regional stability, border management, and the protection of Chadian citizens residing in Nigeria. Mr. Bisso was accompanied by the Consulate’s Liaison Officer, Major Oumar Tahir Attahir.

The engagement concluded with the exchange of souvenirs, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph, symbolising the enduring partnership between the two neighbouring countries in promoting peace, security, and regional integration.
