The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has called for stronger defence cooperation between Nigeria and Poland, identifying border security and technology transfer as priority areas for collaboration to enhance the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
General Oluyede made the call when he received the Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Michał Cygan, during a courtesy visit to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
According to an official statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS stressed the need for both countries to explore practical avenues for expanding defence cooperation, particularly in areas that directly support ongoing military operations.
He highlighted Poland’s experience and expertise in border management and security as valuable opportunities for collaboration, noting that closer engagement could facilitate knowledge-sharing and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to address evolving security challenges.
The CDS thanked the Polish ambassador for the visit and expressed the readiness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to sustain engagements with Polish defence stakeholders towards deepening bilateral military relations.
Earlier, Ambassador Cygan commended the professionalism, resilience and operational effectiveness of the Nigerian military, acknowledging Nigeria’s strategic importance to peace and stability in West Africa and beyond.
“Nigeria’s strategic position and sustained security engagements have continued to contribute significantly to peace and stability in the region,” the ambassador said, describing the country as a crucial stabilising force in the sub-region.
Cygan also identified opportunities for Nigeria and Poland to deepen defence cooperation and share experiences for mutual benefit.
The meeting underscores ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen bilateral relations through defence and security partnerships, with border management, technology transfer and operational support emerging as key areas for further engagement.
