By Nkechi Eze

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has pledged closer collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in order to enhance emergency preparedness and response across the nation’s capital.

The Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, made the commitment while receiving the newly deployed Sector Commander of the FRSC FCT Sector Command, Corps Commander Felix Theman, and his management team at the FEMD Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement signed by FEMD’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, Engr. Abdulrahman noted that both agencies share complementary mandates in the areas of rescue, prevention and mitigation of disasters, and must therefore continue to work closely to safeguard lives and property in the FCT.

“Rescue, prevention and mitigation of disaster is a field for numerous stakeholders, principal of which are the Road Safety Corps and FEMD. It is easy to see that we are sister agencies and it is imperative that we synergize and be seen to work together. Several times our personnel have met in the field during rescue operations. Even when it is not a road crash, we want to be able to call on you for assistance,” he stated.

Responding, Corps Commander Felix Theman explained that his courtesy visit was intended to reaffirm the existing cordial relationship between both agencies and promote stronger cooperation in the face of emerging challenges.

“All stakeholders must work toward providing succour to residents of the FCT. We are conscious of the enormous responsibility on our shoulders in view of the growing population of over 4 million residents, the indiscipline from adjoining states, and the impact of global warming and climate change,” he said.

Corps Commander Theman assured that the FRSC remains fully committed to supporting FEMD in its efforts to improve emergency response and management within the territory.

Also present at the meeting were the FRSC Heads of Operations, Federal Operations, and Public Education.
