The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Zone D (North Central), has applauded the election and appointments of three of its members into key positions in the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), describing the feat as a reflection of the zone’s leadership strength and the growing influence of female journalists in the union.

In a statement signed by the Zonal Secretary, Juliana Ofoku, and issued on Wednesday in Lafia, the Zone’s Vice President, Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, congratulated Comrade Tongnaan Bawa, elected as NUJ National Auditor; Nancy Orshi, appointed as NUJ Board of Trustees member for Zone D; and Hadizah Umar, appointed as NUJ National Ex-officio for Zone D.

The trio, who were inaugurated during the recently concluded NUJ NEC meeting in Kano State, were lauded by Ogbeche for their outstanding contributions to NAWOJ and NUJ over the years, which, she noted, had earned them the trust and confidence of members to serve in their new capacities.

Ogbeche highlighted that the newly inaugurated national officers had, at various times, served the union and the association at state, zonal, and national levels, in different leadership roles. She expressed confidence that they would represent NAWOJ and female journalists in Zone D with dedication, competence, and integrity.

She urged members of the zone to give the new officers their full cooperation and support, stressing that Zone D currently stands out as the only zone with three female representatives in the NUJ NEC. “This achievement is a testament to the diligence, commitment, and leadership capabilities of female journalists in the zone,” she said.

The NAWOJ vice president also commended the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya; the first female NUJ Deputy National President, Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde; NAWOJ National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim; and all NEC members for reposing confidence in the new officials. She pledged the zone’s readiness to support NUJ’s projects and programmes to ensure the union attains greater heights.
