The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, CON, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a pillar of national service, integrity, and unwavering patriotism whose contributions to Nigeria’s development will forever be remembered.
In an official condolence message issued on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, Dr. Matawalle noted that the late President passed away on Sunday at a clinic in London, United Kingdom. He extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Buhari family, and the entire nation over what he called a monumental loss.
“Former President Buhari served with distinction in the Nigerian Military, ultimately rising to the esteemed rank of General and Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985,” the Minister said. “Following his military tenure, he was elected as Nigeria’s President, serving from 2015 to 2023. His contributions have made him a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s modern political landscape.”
Dr. Matawalle emphasized that Buhari’s legacy of honour, discipline, and national service is deeply woven into the fabric of Nigeria’s history. He said the former President exemplified the values of patriotism and public accountability, inspiring generations with his devotion to a united and indivisible Nigeria.
“In addition to this heartfelt tribute is a reflection on the former President’s lifelong commitment to national development and service. President Muhammadu Buhari embodied discipline and public service. His steadfast belief in a united and indivisible Nigeria inspired countless individuals, including many Nigerians who regarded him as a role model,” the statement read.
The Minister prayed for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Aljanatul Firdaus and to provide comfort to his family and the entire Nigerian people in this time of national mourning.
