The Nigerian Navy marked a significant moment in the careers of seven of its officers on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, as they were officially decorated with their new ranks at a formal ceremony held at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja. The event, known in naval tradition as the “shipping of stripes,” signifies the elevation of these officers to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, in recognition of their dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the service of the Nigerian Navy and the nation at large.

In an official signed statement, the Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore Aliu Adams, disclosed that the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Ogalla, was represented at the ceremony by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Abdullahi Dewu. While addressing attendees, Rear Admiral Dewu congratulated the newly promoted officers and commended them for their professionalism and outstanding service. He also extended warm felicitations to their spouses and families, noting the vital role they play in the lives and success of the officers.

Rear Admiral Dewu emphasized that the promotions reflect more than individual merit, they also acknowledge the strength of the family unit that supports and sustains officers through the demands of military service. “Today’s ceremony is a celebration of hard work, integrity, professionalism, and perseverance,” he stated. “Your promotion is not just recognition of past achievements but also a call to greater responsibility as Lieutenant Commanders in the Nigerian Navy. You must put in your best in the Navy’s effort in fighting insecurity and maritime crime in the country.”

The officers promoted and decorated during the ceremony were Lieutenant Sadiq Alhassan, Lieutenant Augusta Aku, Lieutenant James Enejoh, Lieutenant Clement Eyeh, Lieutenant James Fatika, Lieutenant Titilayo George, and Lieutenant Deborah Nwaorji. The event was witnessed by their families, branch chiefs, directors, senior officers, and well-wishers, all of whom gathered to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Following the decoration, the ceremony concluded with a group photo session and a brief reception in honour of the officers, creating a moment of camaraderie and reflection on their achievements and future responsibilities.
