The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly refuted media reports and claims by an advocacy group alleging that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, made insensitive remarks regarding the recent tragic incident in Yelwata, Benue State.
In an official signed statement by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director Defence Information, dated Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the military high command described the interpretation of General Musa’s comments by the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI) as misleading and taken completely out of context.
“We categorically state that the interpretation and portrayal of the CDS’s comments by the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity, as reported, are both misleading and taken out of context. At no point did the CDS intend to blame victims or justify the heinous acts perpetrated by criminal elements in Benue State or elsewhere,” the statement read.
According to Brig. Gen. Gusau, the CDS’s remarks were aimed at shedding light on the complex realities of conflict zones and the deceptive tactics used by insurgents and criminal networks to infiltrate communities and destabilize local harmony.
“The comments were made in good faith, within the broader context of encouraging communities to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and unite against those who seek to destroy peace and order,” he noted.
The Defence Headquarters expressed deep regret over the politicisation of national security issues by advocacy groups and emphasised that General Musa has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the protection of all Nigerians, regardless of ethnic, religious, or regional affiliation.
“General Musa has worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of citizens, promote civil-military cooperation, and uphold the values of professionalism, compassion, and integrity in military operations,” Gusau added.
The statement also rejected what it described as “reckless and unfounded” claims that the CDS’s remarks were provocative or insensitive, stating that such assertions not only mislead the public but also jeopardize the morale and mission of the Armed Forces in managing emotionally charged and volatile situations nationwide.
While reaffirming the military’s respect for the right of citizens and civil society to raise concerns, the DHQ urged stakeholders to verify information and avoid making inflammatory statements capable of escalating tensions or eroding public trust in national institutions.
“The Defence Headquarters remains committed to working with all communities, civil society organisations, and government partners to ensure justice, peace, and accountability prevail across Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
