The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been recognised for his contributions to strengthening climate resilience and advancing the use of meteorological intelligence for national development.
Anosike received the ChangeMaker Climate Leadership Award at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards held on November 3, 2026, at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of activities marking the centenary celebration of The Daily Times of Nigeria.
The award acknowledges his leadership in advancing meteorological development, driving institutional reforms and repositioning NiMet as a technology-driven and service-oriented agency with enhanced capacity to provide reliable weather and climate information.
Since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2023, Anosike has pursued reforms aimed at strengthening the agency’s scientific capabilities, modernising its operations and expanding the application of weather and climate information to critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.
His administration has particularly emphasised the importance of meteorological intelligence in aviation, agriculture, disaster risk management and climate adaptation, where timely and accurate forecasts are essential for protecting lives, safeguarding livelihoods and supporting economic activities.
The recognition also reflects NiMet’s growing role in global discussions on climate resilience, early warning systems, sustainable investment and the application of scientific knowledge to development.
The award underscores the importance of strong meteorological institutions in helping countries respond to the growing challenges of climate variability and change, strengthen disaster preparedness and make informed decisions across different sectors.
For NiMet, the recognition further reinforces its commitment to providing timely, accurate and reliable weather and climate information in support of national safety, economic productivity and sustainable development.
Under Anosike’s leadership, the agency continues to expand its mandate beyond conventional weather forecasting to delivering actionable climate intelligence that strengthens national preparedness, protects communities and supports Nigeria’s resilience to climate-related challenges.
