The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), has charged graduating officers of the Army War College Nigeria to translate the knowledge acquired during their nine months of intensive professional military education into improved operational results, sound leadership and effective mission accomplishment.
Musa gave the charge on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the graduation ceremony of Army War College Nigeria Course 10/2026, stressing that the true value of military training lies in its practical application and the quality of decisions officers make in the discharge of their duties.
He said the graduands were transitioning from professional learning to greater responsibility, urging them to demonstrate sound judgment, integrity and the capacity to respond effectively to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
“Today is more than the completion of a course, but a point of transition from learning to application and from professional qualification to greater responsibility,” the minister said.
He maintained that the success of the institution should not be measured by the certificates awarded to its graduates alone, but by their leadership qualities, decision-making abilities and achievements in the field.
“The value of this college will ultimately be measured not by the certificates alone, but by the quality of judgement the officers bring to leadership, and the results they deliver on the field,” he stated.
Musa challenged the officers to move beyond reacting to security threats after they emerge, urging them to strengthen their capacity to anticipate risks, identify vulnerabilities and adapt quickly to changing operational environments.
According to him, contemporary military leadership requires professional competence, intellectual curiosity and the courage to make difficult decisions under pressure.
The minister also urged the graduands to contribute to the development of indigenous defence capabilities, stressing that Nigeria’s long-term security architecture must not depend solely on foreign technologies.
He called for stronger collaboration among the Armed Forces, universities, research institutions, defence industries and Nigerian innovators to develop technologies and systems capable of addressing the country’s operational needs.
Musa identified unmanned aerial systems, artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities and data analytics as important areas in which the military must build capacity to improve operational effectiveness and respond to emerging forms of warfare.
He further emphasised that innovation was not the exclusive responsibility of engineers, scientists and procurement specialists, noting that commanders had a direct role in identifying operational gaps and ensuring that proposed solutions were practical and responsive to the challenges confronting troops.
“Commanders are often best placed to identify operational gaps, articulate problems clearly and work to develop solutions,” he said, urging the officers to take greater responsibility for driving innovation within their respective formations and appointments.
The minister also charged the graduands to align their professional responsibilities with the national security vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, while maintaining professionalism, loyalty and commitment to duty.
He reminded the officers that their training represented a significant investment by the nation, the Armed Forces and other security agencies, as well as sacrifices made by their families.
“As you report to your formations and appointments, I charge you to demonstrate your value through the quality of your decisions and the integrity with which you discharge your duties,” Musa said.
He urged them to ensure that the knowledge acquired at the college translated into better planning, stronger teamwork and a consistent commitment to mission accomplishment.
“Let the knowledge acquired here be visible in better planning, stronger teamwork, and a consistent commitment to mission accomplishment,” he added.
Musa congratulated the officers on completing the course, expressing satisfaction with their overall performance, which he described as very good.
He commended the Commandant, faculty and staff of the Army War College Nigeria for their dedication to professional military education and the development of officers for higher command and strategic responsibilities.
The minister also praised the Chief of Army Staff for the visible improvements in the college’s infrastructure and educational advancement, expressing satisfaction with the progress recorded since his last visit.
He further acknowledged the participation of allied officers, civilians and personnel from other security agencies, noting that their involvement strengthened professional cooperation and relationships necessary for achieving shared national security objectives.
