The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established a dedicated support channel for families of victims of the ATR 42 aircraft crash at Igbokoda, Ondo State, as it intensifies search and recovery operations and begins a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The support arrangement is intended to provide timely information, clarification and assistance to the affected families as the Service works to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident involving NAF 931 on October 5, 2026.
According to an official statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the helpline has been established at NAF Headquarters, within the Office of the Directorate of Veterans Affairs, to facilitate direct communication with recorded next of kin.
The statement said administrative processes had also been activated, including the organisation of meetings with affected families and other support arrangements to provide practical assistance during the period of grief.
It added that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, had directed sustained search and recovery operations alongside a comprehensive investigation into the crash.
As part of the investigative process, the NAF has constituted a 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board to establish the circumstances and causes of the accident and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
The board is headed by Air Vice Marshal FO Ankeli, while Air Vice Marshal EOE Ebiowe is coordinating the wider investigation and recovery efforts as Head of the Investigation and Recovery Team.
The board comprises specialists in aviation operations, flight safety, piloting, air traffic control, aircraft engineering, maintenance and medical services. Representatives of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) are also included to strengthen technical collaboration.
According to the Service, the investigation will examine operational, technical, environmental, human and organisational factors surrounding the accident, with relevant evidence to be systematically examined, documented and preserved.
The board will also assess the emergency response, including search and rescue operations, medical response, recovery efforts and accident-site management, before making evidence-based recommendations to improve aviation safety.
The NAF assured the public that it would provide appropriate updates as verified information becomes available, while protecting sensitive investigative information and preserving the integrity of the proceedings.
It cautioned against drawing conclusions about the cause of the crash before the investigation is completed and its findings duly considered.
The Service expressed condolences to the bereaved families, colleagues and others affected by the tragedy, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the families and implementing appropriate safety recommendations arising from the investigation.
