The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to sustain hope in the country, uphold patriotism and strengthen national unity as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Yilwatda, in an Independence Day message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, said Nigeria’s journey since independence had been marked by challenges, but also by resilience, unity and an enduring belief in the country’s potential.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to the Nigerian project, stressing that the country’s diversity and resilience remained important foundations for its continued development.
According to him, the anniversary provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s journey, honour the sacrifices of past generations and renew their commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
Yilwatda said Nigerians had demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to overcome adversity and move forward despite periods of difficulty, urging citizens to preserve the spirit of togetherness that has sustained the country since independence.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices, patience and determination of Nigerians in navigating the economic and social challenges confronting the country, while expressing optimism about the nation’s future.
The APC chairman linked his optimism to ongoing economic reforms, including changes to the foreign-exchange market, efforts to improve domestic revenue mobilisation and monetary and fiscal policy measures, which he said were designed to address longstanding structural challenges.
He said the reforms had involved short-term sacrifices but argued that they were beginning to produce signs of macroeconomic stabilisation. Recent public reporting on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary has similarly highlighted calls by political and civic leaders for unity, patriotism and renewed faith in the country.
Yilwatda called for continued patriotism and collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to contribute to national development and resist tendencies that could undermine the country’s unity.
He said the future of Nigeria required the collective efforts of citizens across ethnic, religious, political and geographical divides, stressing that the country’s strength lies in its diversity and shared national identity.
The APC chairman congratulated Nigerians on the 66th Independence Anniversary and called for renewed confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome its challenges and realise its potential.
