The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified its response to the recent flooding in Ebonyi State, deploying a special intervention team to assess the damage and identify the immediate needs of affected communities.
According to a statement by NEMA Press Unit, the assessment team, led by the Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman, visited flood-affected communities in Ohazura, Afikpo, Ivo and other areas of the state.
Several houses and farmlands were affected by the flooding, as the team engaged residents and assessed the extent of the disaster to guide ongoing humanitarian intervention.
The team comprised the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr Abbani Imam Garki; Head of NEMA Enugu Operations Office, Mrs Priscilla Maduekwe; officials of the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and members of the Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs).
The special intervention team was deployed by the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, to reinforce the response efforts of the Agency’s Enugu Operations Office and the Ebonyi State Government, while strengthening coordination with other relevant stakeholders.
Earlier, the NEMA delegation had delivered Federal Government-approved relief materials to the state to provide immediate assistance to people affected by the flooding.
Receiving the materials, Ebonyi State Governor, Mr Francis Nwifuru, commended NEMA for its timely intervention and continued support in addressing the humanitarian consequences of the disaster.
Nwifuru assured the delegation that the relief materials would be distributed transparently and judiciously to ensure they reached the intended beneficiaries.
The assessment and relief intervention underscore NEMA’s efforts to strengthen disaster response, support affected communities and enhance collaboration with state authorities and other stakeholders in Ebonyi State.
