The Nigerian Army has operationalised 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, alongside 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje, as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and protect vulnerable communities across Kebbi State.
According to an official statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, directed the operationalisation of the formations as part of the Army’s strategy to expand its operational footprint and improve response to security threats in the North-West.
The COAS was represented at the event by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force (North-West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna.
Koughna said the establishment of the Brigade was in line with the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to optimise its force structure, strengthen command and control, and enhance operational response to emerging security challenges across the region.
He charged the Acting Commander of 28 Brigade, Colonel Abdullahi Umar, to ensure that the new formation effectively provides essential fire support capabilities and contributes to ongoing security operations within the Division’s area of responsibility.
The GOC also tasked the troops with maintaining discipline, tactical focus and professionalism, stressing the need for seamless cooperation among security agencies to achieve lasting peace in the state.
He urged the personnel to strictly adhere to the Rules of Engagement and ensure the protection of law-abiding citizens while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
Koughna also commiserated with residents of Jandutse community following the recent death of a resident in a bandit attack, assuring them that the military would increase its presence in the area to enhance the safety and security of the community.
The residents expressed appreciation to the GOC for the Nigerian Army’s continued efforts to protect communities and strengthen security across Kebbi State.
