The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has secured a major boost to its combat capability with the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from Bell Textron in the United States of America.
The milestone was marked by a beam signing ceremony at the Bell Textron facility in Amarillo, Texas, led by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who headed a delegation of senior NAF officials to the facility.
According to an official statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the acquisition forms part of the implementation of the Nigeria-United States Government defence cooperation programme and ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to modernise the Armed Forces.
The acquisition is expected to strengthen the nation’s airpower capabilities and provide the Armed Forces with additional platforms to respond to current and emerging security threats.
Aneke expressed appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his strategic leadership, support and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.
Speaking at the ceremony, the CAS described the acquisition as an important milestone in the NAF’s efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready force.
“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters represents an important milestone in our continuing efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force,” Aneke said.
He said the programme aligned with his command philosophy of sustaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of delivering decisive airpower effects in synergy with surface forces towards achieving national security objectives.
The CAS emphasised that the focus would not be limited to the acquisition of the platforms, but would also include ensuring that the capabilities translate into enhanced operational effectiveness in support of national security.
Aneke also acknowledged the continued support and cooperation of the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other stakeholders involved in the AH-1Z Viper programme.
He stressed the importance of sustained defence cooperation, technical collaboration and capability development to the successful implementation of the programme, while reaffirming the NAF’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and promoting professional excellence.
The NAF delegation also inspected the AH-1Z Viper production line at the Bell Textron facility as part of the visit.
The development underscores the Federal Government’s continuing efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and strengthen Nigeria’s airpower capabilities through strategic defence partnerships and the acquisition of modern military platforms.
