On emergency communication, she pointed to the deployment of 91 Starlink terminals as part of efforts to build a more resilient communication network capable of withstanding the disruptions that typically accompany major disasters. She also spoke of ongoing legal and policy reforms and the development of Nigeria’s Early Warnings for All (EW4All) roadmap, alongside deepening partnerships at national, regional and global levels.
The Director General disclosed that NEMA is currently reviewing key policy and operational documents, including the National Disaster Management Framework and the National Disaster Response Plan, while simultaneously developing new frameworks such as the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy and the Disaster Risk Financing Framework. These initiatives, she explained, are designed to align Nigeria’s disaster management architecture with emerging risks, contemporary approaches and global best practices.
Mrs. Umar reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s early warning systems, stressing that the ultimate goal remains ensuring credible and timely risk information translates into informed decisions, coordinated early action and better protection for lives, livelihoods and vulnerable communities across the country.
