The Nigeria Police Force has commenced a nationwide sensitisation drive on the proposed State Police system, with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu reaffirming the Force’s readiness to support its effective implementation if adopted.

According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP gave the assurance while declaring open a One-Day Sensitisation Workshop on State Police organised by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS).

The workshop, which brought together police officers for discussions on the proposed reform, is aimed at equipping personnel with the knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to the national discourse on State Police and prepare the Force for possible implementation.

“This workshop provides a critical platform to equip our officers with the knowledge required to engage constructively in the ongoing national conversation on State Police and support its effective implementation where adopted,” the IGP said.

IGP Disu emphasised that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to ensuring that any transition to State Police is guided by professionalism, accountability and operational excellence in the interest of national security.

He urged participants to actively engage in the deliberations and cascade the knowledge gained to officers in their respective Commands and Formations to foster a shared understanding of the proposed policing reform across the Force.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies, Professor Olu Ogunshakin, commended the Inspector-General for establishing the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police, noting that several of its recommendations have already been incorporated into the proposed State Police Bill.

“The work of the Steering Committee has made significant contributions to the proposed State Police Bill and reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s proactive role in shaping policing reforms,” Professor Ogunshakin said.

The sensitisation workshop forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s broader strategy to prepare its personnel for emerging policing reforms while sustaining professionalism, operational effectiveness and public confidence in policing across the country.
