The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a new salary structure for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, describing the move as a major boost to troop welfare and a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s military.
According to an official statement signed by Queeneth Iheoma-Hart, Chief Information Officer, for the Director, Information and Public Relations, Matawalle said the approval underscores the President’s resolve to improve the morale, welfare and operational effectiveness of officers and soldiers who continue to make sacrifices in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Minister noted that the issue of reviewing the salaries of military personnel had remained a priority since the inception of the current administration, adding that he had consistently championed the initiative within government.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for what he described as his visionary leadership, steadfast support and unwavering commitment to the welfare of members of the Armed Forces.
Matawalle said the new salary package reflects the President’s determination to build a motivated, resilient and highly professional military capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Under the approved salary structure, about 250,000 personnel of the Armed Forces are expected to benefit, with implementation scheduled to commence on September 1, 2026.
He disclosed that officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
According to the Minister, officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will benefit from a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.
Matawalle said the salary review forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve the welfare of troops engaged in combating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
Quoting President Tinubu, the Minister said, “The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.”
He added that the Federal Government would continue to prioritise troop welfare while modernising the Armed Forces through sustained investments in weapons, equipment and advanced technological capabilities.
The Minister also urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a recognition of their patriotism and sacrifices in service to the nation.
“I urge our servicemen to take this gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he said.
