Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted terrorist infiltration of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State and launched an aggressive pursuit of the fleeing attackers, leading to the rescue of nine abducted civilians.

According to an official statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the attempted attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on August 2 when terrorists tried to breach the military facility under the cover of darkness.

The statement said vigilant troops detected the movement of the terrorists and responded with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, forcing the attackers to abandon their mission and retreat after suffering heavy casualties.

Following the failed infiltration, reinforcements were deployed and troops immediately commenced a pursuit operation against the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted an unspecified number of residents from nearby communities during the attack.

The sustained pressure by the troops resulted in the successful rescue of nine abducted civilians, who were recovered unharmed.

The military, however, confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer were killed during the fierce exchange of fire, while two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds. The injured personnel were airlifted for advanced medical treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.

Troops have since secured the area and are conducting exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ losses and prevent any further threat to surrounding communities.

Military authorities described the failed attack as another indication of the growing challenges faced by terrorist groups operating in the North-West, noting that sustained military operations have continued to degrade their operational capability and limit their freedom of action.

The statement also dismissed online reports claiming that six security personnel were killed during the incident, clarifying that only one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives in the encounter.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA reaffirmed its determination to sustain offensive operations against terrorist groups, protect vulnerable communities and restore lasting peace and security across the North-West region.
