The Nigeria Police Force has renewed its commitment to developing sporting talent within its ranks following Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel’s historic gold medal victory in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force described Nathaniel’s triumph as evidence of the positive impact of its sustained investment in sports development, personnel welfare and capacity building under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.
Nathaniel stormed to victory on Friday night, crossing the finish line in 48.47 seconds to claim the Commonwealth title. The feat marks a remarkable improvement from his sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and further establishes him among the elite quarter-mile hurdlers in the Commonwealth.
The Police leadership said the achievement reflects the success of its institutional approach to identifying, nurturing and supporting talented athletes within the Force. It noted that sports remain a key component of tactical fitness, personnel morale and youth engagement, while also providing officers with opportunities to excel on the global stage.
Congratulating the athlete, IGP Disu praised Nathaniel for bringing honour to both Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force, describing his performance as an inspiration to officers and men serving across the country.
The Force reaffirmed that it will continue to strengthen programmes aimed at discovering and supporting exceptional sporting talent among its personnel as part of broader efforts to enhance welfare, professional development and institutional excellence.
