The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), climate and weather data analytics, and climate information services aimed at strengthening climate resilience, agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Prof. Charles Anosike, alongside the Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, Dr. Debisi Araba, and the organisation’s Director of Data Intelligence and Governance as well as National Representative for Senegal, Dr. Racine Ly.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the partnership underscores NiMet’s commitment to embracing emerging technologies to improve weather and climate services.

He disclosed that the Agency has already established an AI Research Team to explore the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency, adding that the collaboration with AKADEMIYA2063 would further accelerate those efforts.

According to him, the partnership aligns with NiMet’s strategic vision of positioning the Agency at the forefront of digital innovation in meteorology while enhancing its capacity to provide more accurate and timely climate information for national development.

In his remarks, Dr. Araba described the collaboration as a significant milestone in strengthening Africa’s capacity for data-driven decision-making and evidence-based policymaking.

He said the combination of AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data analytics and policy research with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would deliver practical solutions to improve climate resilience, support food security and promote sustainable development across Nigeria.

Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, both organisations will collaborate on the application of artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making to strengthen AI-enabled climate services and agricultural planning.

To facilitate implementation of the agreement, the partners will establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority areas of collaboration, coordinate activities under the MoU and develop joint initiatives to advance climate services, artificial intelligence research, innovation and sustainable development.
