Nigeria has stepped up efforts to secure more employment opportunities for its citizens and strengthen bilateral energy cooperation with Qatar through a series of high-level diplomatic engagements in Doha.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Mahmood Yakubu, held separate meetings on Sunday with senior Qatari officials and energy stakeholders aimed at advancing the country’s economic and foreign policy objectives.

During a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of Labour, Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, discussions focused on expanding employment opportunities for qualified Nigerians in the Gulf nation. Ambassador Yakubu said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s “4D Doctrine” of foreign policy, which places strong emphasis on diaspora engagement as a driver of national development.

The talks explored ways to facilitate greater access for Nigerian professionals and skilled workers to Qatar’s labour market, reflecting ongoing efforts to leverage international partnerships to address employment challenges at home.

In a separate engagement, the ambassador received a delegation from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), led by its Secretary-General, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, a Nigerian. The meeting highlighted Nigeria’s growing role in global energy diplomacy and its commitment to deepening collaboration within the gas-producing bloc.

The GECF, headquartered in Doha, brings together some of the world’s leading natural gas-producing countries to promote cooperation and dialogue on gas-related issues. Nigeria currently occupies a prominent position within the organisation, with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, serving as Chairman of the Forum’s ministerial meetings.

The twin engagements underscore Nigeria’s continued diplomatic efforts to attract economic opportunities for its citizens while reinforcing its strategic influence in the global energy sector through strengthened international partnerships.
