The Nigeria Police Force has called on media organisations and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing security-related reports, while clarifying that Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu never issued a “shoot-on-sight” directive against individuals found with illegal firearms.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, reports alleging that the Inspector-General ordered officers to “shoot anyone with illegal firearms” are false and a misrepresentation of his remarks during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State.
The Force stated that the IGP’s comments had been taken out of context, explaining that he merely reminded officers that only security personnel legally authorised under the law are permitted to carry firearms, while expressing concern over the increasing proliferation of illegal weapons used by criminals to perpetrate kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult violence and other violent crimes.
The statement further explained that the Inspector-General reiterated that the use of firearms by police personnel is strictly regulated by Force Order 237, which clearly outlines the circumstances under which officers may lawfully use firearms in the discharge of their duties.
It added that the IGP emphasised the need for officers to operate within the law at all times and comply with established rules governing the use of force, stressing that he did not direct officers to shoot anyone solely for possessing an illegal firearm.
The Nigeria Police Force warned that inaccurate reporting on security matters could create unnecessary fear, misinform the public and erode confidence in security institutions, urging journalists and other information handlers to verify facts before publication.
