Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade operating under Operation UDO KA have dismantled a suspected kidnapping syndicate in Imo State, arresting a suspect and recovering part of a ransom payment as well as a vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
The intelligence-led operation, conducted on 17 July 2026 in collaboration with other security agencies, targeted the criminal network in Obinwanne Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area of the state.
Acting on credible intelligence, the troops carried out a cordon-and-search operation during which they recovered a bag believed to have been used to transport ransom money. The bag was found abandoned in a nearby bush, suggesting the proceeds had already been shared among members of the gang.
Further intelligence exploitation led security operatives to a residential building where a suspect was arrested. A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of a black Lexus saloon car allegedly used during the kidnapping, mobile phones, identity documents and ₦298,200 in cash suspected to be part of the ransom paid by the victim’s family.
The rescued victim reportedly identified the arrested suspect as one of those involved in the abduction. Preliminary investigations further indicated that the suspect provided his vehicle to the syndicate’s alleged kingpin for the operation and later received a share of the ransom.
The suspect and all recovered exhibits have been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate, including the alleged ringleader who remains at large.
The operation highlights the growing reliance on intelligence-driven security operations and the sustained collaboration among security agencies in ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the South-East.
