The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with the United States, underscoring the importance of sustained collaboration in tackling evolving security challenges.
According to an official statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Department of State, Mr Frank Garcia, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
General Oluyede, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United States as one built on mutual respect, shared democratic values and a common commitment to regional and global peace and security.
He acknowledged the United States’ continued support to Nigeria in military training, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism operations and institutional capacity development.
The CDS noted that the changing security environment across Africa requires stronger international partnerships to effectively address terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and other emerging threats.
He expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen bilateral defence relations and expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
Air Vice Marshal Edosa also reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to professionalism, regional stability and sustained engagement in promoting lasting peace and security within Nigeria and across the African continent.
Speaking during the visit, the United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Mr Frank Garcia, appreciated the warm reception accorded his delegation and reiterated the commitment of the United States Government to strengthening its strategic partnership with Nigeria.
He recognised Nigeria’s pivotal role in advancing peace, stability and security across West Africa and the African continent, while commending the efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in combating terrorism and other security threats.
Garcia also assured the Defence Headquarters of continued United States support through enhanced defence cooperation, security assistance and strategic dialogue.
The meeting provided both sides with an opportunity to exchange views on regional security developments, deepen mutual understanding and explore additional areas of defence collaboration aimed at advancing shared security objectives.
