The Enugu State Police Command has intensified its border security operations with the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect for unlawful possession of a firearm and the recovery of a locally made gun along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.
According to an official statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect, Ogbonna Nnaji, was arrested in early July 2026 by operatives of the Command’s Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a stop-and-search operation at Ugwuoba in Oji River Local Government Area, near the Enugu–Anambra boundary.
The statement disclosed that the suspect was found in unlawful possession of a concealed locally made double-barrel pistol during a search conducted by the operatives.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Nnaji boarded a commuter Toyota Sienna minivan from Solution Park in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, en route to Enugu before he was intercepted by the police team.
The Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the firearm and establish the suspect’s possible involvement in other criminal activities. He is expected to be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command noted that the latest arrest came barely four days after the same Distress Response Squad recorded a similar breakthrough during a border security operation on June 28, 2026, when another suspect travelling in a tricycle was intercepted with a firearm.
It added that the successive recoveries demonstrate the Command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and efforts to prevent the influx of illegal firearms into Enugu State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to sustain robust border security operations and urged residents to remain security conscious by providing credible and timely information to support ongoing efforts to combat crime across the state.
