The Nigerian Army has taken a significant step to strengthen its operational capacity and presence in the South-East with the groundbreaking ceremony for a 120-bed Army Medical Centre at Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.
According to an official signed statement by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the foundation for the strategic medical facility was laid on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, alongside the Governors of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Enugu States.
The statement said the project is aimed at expanding the Nigerian Army’s force support infrastructure to enhance operational readiness and strengthen security operations across the South-East geopolitical zone.
The proposed medical centre will serve as a critical healthcare hub for troops, particularly personnel undergoing training at the Depot Nigerian Army, while also providing medical support for ongoing and future military operations in the region. The Army noted that the facility will contribute to maintaining a healthy, resilient and combat-ready force.
In line with its civil-military cooperation initiative, the Army disclosed that the medical centre has been strategically located outside the Depot to enable surrounding communities benefit from quality healthcare services, thereby strengthening relations between the military and host communities.
The facility is expected to provide a broad range of specialised medical services, including emergency care, surgical theatres, intensive care units, diagnostic laboratories, outpatient and specialist clinics, as well as dedicated wards for men, women and children. It will also feature a psychiatric unit to provide treatment for personnel suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other operational stress-related conditions.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu and the governors described the project as a strategic investment in both national security and regional development. They noted that beyond improving military healthcare, the medical centre will enhance operational support systems, promote socio-economic development, expand access to quality healthcare and foster stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Army and host communities.
The Army said the project reflects its continued commitment to expanding its operational capabilities and regional presence while improving the welfare of its personnel and supporting peace, security and development across the South-East.
