The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks and announced the introduction of an online self-service registration platform for eligible first-time voters.

According to an official statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Haruna, the Commission approved the extension after reviewing the ongoing exercise and considering feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

The statement noted that the nationwide CVR exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026. However, to provide more eligible Nigerians with the opportunity to register, the exercise has now been extended until Friday, July 24, 2026.

INEC said the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters ahead of future elections.

The Commission also announced the introduction of a self-service online voter registration option for eligible first-time voters as part of efforts to improve accessibility, innovation and service delivery.

According to the statement, the new service will become available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the Commission’s dedicated Continuous Voter Registration portal, where users can also access a step-by-step registration guide.

INEC explained that the self-service platform will allow eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without the need to physically visit any INEC office.

The Commission added that the platform incorporates robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

INEC urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and utilise the new online registration option, reaffirming its commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive and technology-driven voter registration process.
