The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned 80 housing units under the Nigerian Army Affordable Home Ownership Scheme in Jos, Plateau State, reaffirming his commitment to the Soldier-First Culture by prioritising the welfare and wellbeing of personnel as a key driver of operational effectiveness and national security.
According to an official signed statement by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the housing units were inaugurated on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, as part of the Nigerian Army’s sustained efforts to improve the living standards of its personnel through affordable home ownership initiatives.
Lieutenant General Shaibu stated that providing quality and affordable housing for soldiers represents a deliberate investment in their welfare, morale and combat readiness, noting that personnel who make enormous sacrifices in defence of the nation deserve decent accommodation and a secure future for their families.
The COAS stressed that the welfare of personnel remains a central pillar of his command philosophy, emphasizing that a well-motivated and professionally fulfilled soldier is better positioned to discharge the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigerian Army effectively.
He disclosed that the 80 housing units commissioned in Jos add to the 60 units delivered in 2025, while another 120 housing units in Abuja and 40 units in Benin are scheduled for commissioning, reflecting the Army’s continued commitment to expanding affordable housing opportunities for its personnel across the country.
In recognition of the sacrifices made by wounded personnel, Lieutenant General Shaibu announced that five percent of the newly completed housing units have been reserved for soldiers wounded in action. He described the allocation as a demonstration of the Nigerian Army’s enduring gratitude to gallant personnel whose courage and sacrifices continue to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty, peace and security.
The Army Chief urged beneficiaries to preserve and maintain the facilities, describing home ownership as a symbol of stability, responsibility and a lasting reward for dedicated service.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Post-Service Housing Development Limited, Major General Isaiah Alison, commended the Chief of Army Staff for placing personnel welfare at the forefront of his leadership priorities. He assured that additional housing projects are being developed to extend the benefits of the scheme to more soldiers nationwide.
As part of his visit to Jos, Lieutenant General Shaibu also commissioned newly completed trainee hostels and convenience facilities at the 3 Division Training School, underscoring the Nigerian Army’s holistic approach to strengthening personnel welfare, enhancing training infrastructure and improving institutional capacity in support of operational readiness and national security objectives.
