The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has concluded the cascading of its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, marking a significant step towards aligning enterprise-wide goals with directorate-level implementation to strengthen meteorological service delivery, improve institutional performance, and advance climate resilience across Nigeria.

The exercise followed the launch of the Agency’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan on 16 March 2026 and was designed to translate the organisation’s strategic vision into actionable plans across all directorates.

Built on the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) framework, the strategic plan is anchored on five strategic pillars and 12 strategic objectives, providing a comprehensive roadmap for enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening institutional capacity, and delivering world-class meteorological services in support of national development.

Recognising that effective strategy implementation requires organisation-wide alignment, NiMet undertook the cascading exercise to ensure that every directorate clearly understands its responsibilities and contributions towards achieving the Agency’s long-term objectives.

The exercise focused on translating enterprise-level objectives into directorate-specific priorities by aligning operational goals, business processes, and performance measures with the Agency’s strategic direction. It also established key performance indicators (KPIs) to enhance accountability while integrating strategic objectives into individual performance plans to promote ownership and responsibility across the workforce.

To facilitate effective participation, the exercise was conducted in four batches covering the Agency’s nine directorates and the Office of the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer.

The first batch comprised the Directorate of Weather Forecasting Services and the Directorate of Applied Meteorological Services. The second batch involved the Office of the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, the Directorate of Corporate Services, and the Directorate of Research and Training. The third batch featured the Directorate of Engineering and Technical Services alongside the Directorate of Human Resource Management and Administration, while the final batch included the Directorate of Finance and Accounts, the Directorate of Public Affairs and Customer Protection, and the Legal Services Directorate.

The Agency stated that the structured cascading process has strengthened alignment between strategy and operations, ensuring that every directorate contributes effectively to the successful implementation of the 2026–2030 Strategic Plan. It added that the initiative is expected to improve accountability, enhance institutional performance, strengthen service delivery, and provide a unified framework for achieving NiMet’s vision of delivering world-class meteorological services that support sustainable national development.
