The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have reaffirmed their longstanding partnership, with both organisations agreeing to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence, early warning systems, research and capacity development to strengthen weather and climate services.

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the Administrator and Director-General of the China Meteorological Administration, Dr. Chen Zhenlin, China’s Permanent Representative to the WMO.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the WMO Executive Council.

During the discussions, both Permanent Representatives reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation through the adoption and customisation of the MAZU Artificial Intelligence Early Warning Platform for Nigeria, while leveraging emerging AI technologies to improve weather forecasting, climate monitoring and early warning services.

The two organisations also agreed to adopt a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will provide a framework for broader collaboration in the deployment of the MAZU platform, staff exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorological research, knowledge exchange and scholarship programmes.

According to both parties, the expanded partnership is expected to strengthen technical cooperation between Nigeria and China while delivering mutual socio-economic benefits through improved meteorological services, enhanced disaster preparedness and increased capacity development.
