As part of living up to its mandate, to rid the country of economic and financial crimes, the Acting Director of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Michael T. Wetkas, has called for greater collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, in the fight against economic and financial crimes.

The call was made on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, during a courtesy visit to the Ogun State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Biodun Alamutu, at the State Police Command Headquarters in Eleweeran, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Wetkaz stated that the visit to the State’s Police Headquarters was aimed at ensuring a greater collaboration with the Police in tackling economic and financial crimes in the state.

He said: “We are honoured and humbled by your hospitality. I am here to introduce myself and extend our hand of friendship and collaboration in service.

“We have enjoyed your cooperation; and we know we can count on your assistance.

“If there is any way you want us to assist, we are always ready to help.”

In response, Alamutu commended the EFCC for its tireless efforts in fighting corruption, adding that “If there’s any agency I have been longing to interact with, it is the EFCC.”

Alamutu also lauded the Commission’s commitment and professionalism, adding that “Your investigation may focus on financial crimes, but it’s a critical aspect of our shared goal. I encourage you to stay abreast of current trends to effectively tackle these crimes.

“While I appreciate the complexity of your operations, I believe it’s essential to keep us informed about your activities. We recently encountered a case of an impersonator posing as an EFCC official, and we are addressing such issues.”

In a related development, the Chief Judge of the Ogun State High Court, Hon. Justice Mosunmola Arinola Dipeolu, has pledged the Judiciary’s support and cooperation to the success of the operations of the EFCC in the State.

He gave the assurance on Wednesday, May 23, 2024 when he received a delegation of the EFCC led by Wetkas to the Ogun State Judiciary Complex in Abeokuta.

During the visit, Wetkas expressed gratitude for the existing cooperation between the EFCC and the Judiciary and sought to further strengthen the relationship.

The Chief Judge, represented by the Chief Registrar, Bayo Ojikutu, updated the EFCC delegation on the progress of  EFCC cases in court.

“According to him, “As far as I know, cases have been progressing smoothly. We will convey your message to the Chief Judge.

“We maintain a register of the EFCC’s convictions and prioritize your cases, ensuring expeditious handling. You have the Chief Judge’s full cooperation.”
