Mr. Odita Sunday has been elected President of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), emerging unopposed during the association’s election in Abuja. He succeeds Ismail Musa of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
A veteran journalist with over 25 years of experience covering defence, security, crime, and related beats, Odita enjoys a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and commitment to journalists’ welfare. His unanimous endorsement by colleagues reflects the confidence reposed in his leadership and dedication to ethical journalism.
Odita is the Publisher of RazorNews, a media platform renowned for its in-depth reporting and analysis of defence and security issues.
A respected figure in Nigeria’s media industry, he previously served as President of the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) for six years, where he championed professionalism, capacity building, and members’ welfare.
The former Defence and Security Editor of The Guardian has extensively reported on military operations, exercises, and security engagements across Nigeria. His vast knowledge of defence and national security issues has earned him recognition among military authorities, policymakers, and media professionals.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading crime and defence correspondents, Odita has received several awards for excellence in security reporting, investigative journalism, and humanitarian service. Beyond journalism, he is known for his philanthropic efforts and commitment to national development through impactful storytelling and advocacy.
Throughout his career, he has attended numerous military trainings, seminars, and workshops, and has been embedded in several military operations and exercises. He has participated in multiple gun exercises at the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army and covered major military activities across the country and beyond.
Among his notable assignments, Odita was part of the media team that travelled to Senegal to receive the Nigerian Navy Ship Thunder upon its arrival from the United States. He also participated in several editions of Exercise Obangame Express in Cameroon and Ghana, flew aboard a Nigerian Air Force maritime patrol aircraft to Cameroon, and spent eight days at sea with the Nigerian Navy during Exercise Farauta in the Gulf of Guinea.
His election is expected to usher in a new era of unity, professionalism, enhanced welfare, and constructive engagement between defence correspondents and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s security sector.
Drawing on his extensive experience, Odita is well-positioned to strengthen defence journalism and support national efforts in the fight against terrorism and other security challenges.
