The Nigerian Navy has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing operations against militancy and criminal activities within the Calabar waterways following the arrest and handover of a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS), Calabar Command.
According to an official signed statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspect, identified as Mr Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory deployed at the Forward Operating Base on Dayspring Island, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The arrest forms part of sustained intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and their support structures operating within the region.
Preliminary investigations established that the suspect allegedly maintained regular contact with members of militant groups operating within the Dayspring Island axis and was involved in activities believed to have compromised ongoing security operations.
The Navy further disclosed that intelligence linked the suspect to a notorious militant identified as Steven Joseph, also known as “Juju,” who has been associated with criminal activities within the waterways.
Further findings indicated that the suspect allegedly served as a conduit for the disposal of goods stolen from intercepted market boats, with proceeds from such sales reportedly channelled back to militant networks to support their operations.
Following the conclusion of preliminary investigations, the suspect was handed over to the Department of State Services for further interrogation and possible prosecution in line with extant laws.
The Nigerian Navy said the development underscores its commitment to not only targeting active militant elements but also dismantling the logistical and financial networks that sustain their operations.
It added that intelligence-led maritime operations, community engagement, and targeted security actions will continue to be intensified to ensure lasting peace and stability in the Calabar waterways and adjoining communities.
