The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to the preservation of democratic ideals and national unity.
According to an official signed statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the declaration was made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The statement noted that June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria’s history, symbolising the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts paved the way for democratic governance in the country.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo said the legacy of those who fought for democracy continues to shape the values, responsibilities and aspirations of the Nigerian state.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance, stressing that the administration remains determined to uphold these ideals.
He also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, working in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures across the country to safeguard lives and property.
According to the Minister, maintaining a secure and stable environment remains critical to the sustainability of democracy and the advancement of national development.
He urged Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection and renewed commitment to nation-building.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister stated.
The Federal Government also called on citizens to recommit themselves to lawful conduct, responsible civic engagement and the promotion of national unity as the country continues to consolidate its democratic journey.
