The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated a Service Innovation Committee to drive research, institutionalise innovation, deepen digital transformation, and enhance service delivery in line with ongoing public service reforms.
The inauguration took place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja, as part of efforts aligned with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda and directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation on innovation in governance and service delivery.
In his remarks during the inauguration, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, said innovation remains a central pillar of the Agency’s current operational direction, particularly in strengthening scientific output and service efficiency.
He explained that in a scientific institution such as NiMet, innovation involves the practical application of research findings, scientific discoveries and technological advancements to deliver value-driven services.
Professor Anosike outlined several reforms introduced under his leadership, including the modernization of operational systems, improved weather and climate service delivery, strengthened stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity development, expanded institutional partnerships and the deployment of digital technologies to improve efficiency and decision-making processes.
According to him, these initiatives have significantly improved organisational performance and created an environment that supports continuous innovation across the Agency.
“The establishment of this Committee therefore formalises our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” he said.
He noted that the Service Innovation Committee is expected to serve as a catalyst for scientific and operational advancement by identifying climate-smart solutions, promoting research and development, and providing evidence-based recommendations to support NiMet’s strategic objectives.
The Committee will also advise management on innovation-related policies and monitor progress in the implementation of innovation-driven initiatives across the Agency.
The inauguration reflects NiMet’s broader commitment to professionalism, excellence and technological advancement, positioning the institution to respond more effectively to emerging environmental challenges and evolving stakeholder needs in a rapidly changing global climate landscape.
