President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will intensify efforts to tackle economic hardship, defeat insecurity and secure the release of all citizens held captive by terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements across the country.
The assurance was conveyed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Sunday as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
According to an official signed statement by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yomi Odunuga, the service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” drew prominent government officials, political leaders and other dignitaries from across the country.
Among those in attendance were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack.
Delivering President Tinubu’s message, Senator Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the milestone as evidence of the resilience, commitment and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle and pro-democracy activists who endured persecution, injuries and, in some cases, paid the ultimate price in the quest for democratic rule.
The SGF said President Tinubu remained committed to fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities and would intensify efforts to ensure that the socio-economic challenges confronting Nigerians are significantly reduced through the delivery of meaningful democratic dividends.
Acknowledging the economic difficulties facing many households, as well as the challenges of insecurity, kidnappings and displacement in several communities, Akume said the Federal Government was fully aware of the concerns of citizens.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he stated, adding that the President was addressing the challenges with compassion and a strong sense of responsibility.
On the security situation, Akume reaffirmed that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of the Federal Government. He described recent attacks and abductions in parts of the country as painful reminders of the work that still needs to be done.
He assured Nigerians that the safe return of all persons currently in captivity remains a national priority, noting that security agencies and relevant institutions are receiving the support and resources required to secure communities, protect citizens and preserve Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” Akume declared.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, the SGF urged Nigerians to reject violence, divisive rhetoric and hate campaigns, stressing that democracy must not be turned into a battleground.
He particularly cautioned young Nigerians against allowing themselves to be used for political thuggery, violence, misinformation campaigns, ethnic hostility and religious intolerance.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he warned.
Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media and families to promote peace, tolerance and responsible conduct as the nation prepares for another electoral cycle.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, interfaith harmony and constructive engagement with the international community, he maintained that despite existing challenges, the country’s democratic institutions remain strong and resilient.
The SGF further commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in defending the nation and safeguarding democratic governance.
He urged Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the June 12 heroes by working towards a country where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are secure and every citizen can live in dignity and hope.
