The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Councillor Christopher Adegoke on his historic election as the first Black and minority individual to become Chairman of the Nottinghamshire County Council in the United Kingdom since the council’s establishment in 1889.

According to an official signed statement by Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Councillor Adegoke was officially elected into the prestigious office on Thursday, May 14, 2026, marking a major milestone for the Nigerian diaspora community and inclusive representation in public service in the United Kingdom.

Dabiri-Erewa described the development as a proud moment for Nigeria and Nigerians living abroad, noting that Adegoke’s emergence reflects the resilience, excellence, integrity, and leadership qualities Nigerians continue to demonstrate globally.

“This historic accomplishment is yet another testament to the outstanding contributions Nigerians in the diaspora are making across various sectors around the world. Councillor Christopher Adegoke has made Nigeria proud through his commitment to public service, community development, and exemplary leadership,” she stated.

The NiDCOM Chairman also commended Adegoke’s dedication to grassroots governance, community engagement, and his more than two decades of experience spanning international education, public administration, and community leadership.

She further applauded the inclusive and progressive values demonstrated by the Nottinghamshire County Council in electing him into the distinguished office.

Speaking after his election, Councillor Adegoke expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating that he looked forward to engaging with residents, organisations, charities, and businesses across Nottinghamshire during his tenure.

His civic inauguration ceremony as Chairman and First Citizen of Nottinghamshire County is scheduled to hold on June 28, 2026.

Dabiri-Erewa expressed confidence that Adegoke would continue to inspire Nigerians at home and in the diaspora through purposeful and people-oriented leadership, while wishing him a successful tenure in office.
