The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for stronger judicial capacity and deeper understanding of telecommunications and digital security issues among judges, as Nigeria continues to expand its reliance on technology-driven systems for governance, economic activity, and public services.

Speaking at a judicial workshop held in Lagos, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, represented by Rimini Makama, stressed that telecommunications infrastructure has become a cornerstone of national development and must be clearly understood within the context of modern legal interpretation and adjudication.

He noted that digital and telecom systems now underpin critical sectors of the economy, including financial transactions, national security operations, emergency response systems, and day-to-day government services, making them essential national assets that require informed judicial oversight.

According to him, as Nigeria’s digital ecosystem expands rapidly, courts are increasingly being confronted with cases involving cybercrime, data protection, infrastructure disputes, and digital rights, necessitating continuous judicial education to keep pace with technological advancement.

Maida emphasised that a well-informed judiciary is crucial for ensuring balanced rulings that protect innovation while safeguarding national security and consumer rights in the evolving digital space.

The NCC reiterated its commitment to collaborating with judicial institutions to strengthen regulatory awareness and enhance capacity in telecommunications-related jurisprudence, particularly as digital transformation continues to reshape governance and communication across the country.
