The Federal Road Safety Corps has sensitised management and staff of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on road safety and responsible driving culture, highlighting the shared responsibility of promoting safety and ethical conduct in public service.

The sensitisation programme, held at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja, focused on educating participants on safe road practices, adherence to traffic regulations, and the importance of responsible road usage in reducing accidents and preventing avoidable loss of lives.

In his welcome address, the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu, DSSRS, described road safety as a collective responsibility that mirrors the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.

Represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Musa Ibrahim Alkali, MNI, Mr. Oparaodu commended the FRSC team for the initiative, noting that the exercise would equip officers and staff with practical knowledge capable of enhancing safety consciousness on the roads.

He urged participants to pay close attention throughout the session and maximise the opportunity to learn life-saving safety measures that would promote responsible behaviour among motorists and other road users.

Delivering a paper titled, “Defensive Driving Skill: A Vital Road Safety Approach to Road Traffic Crash Reduction,” the Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Mr. Ohaeri Osondu, FNIPR, stressed the importance of defensive driving in reducing road traffic crashes and fostering a safer driving environment.

Mr. Osondu explained that defensive driving enables motorists to remain alert, anticipate potential dangers, improve reaction time, and cultivate safer driving habits, while also encouraging responsible road use among all categories of drivers.

He further noted that maintaining safe distances, remaining conscious of one’s surroundings, and adapting to changing road conditions are critical measures that can significantly reduce accidents and improve safety for all road users.

The programme ended with renewed calls for sustained collaboration between the FRSC and ICPC on public safety initiatives, reinforcing the message that integrity on the road is inseparable from integrity in public service.
