The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has taken a decisive step toward overhauling police education in Nigeria, following a high-level strategic meeting aimed at expanding institutional capacity and strengthening professional standards across the Force.
The meeting, held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Federal Ministry of Education, focused on plans to establish a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Ogun State, alongside a comprehensive programme to upgrade and secure accreditation for all 42 Police Colleges nationwide.
The session was hosted by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad. Also in attendance was former Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun (Rtd), alongside other critical stakeholders, underscoring the national importance of the reform agenda.
Deliberations at the meeting centred on infrastructure development, with a strong emphasis on strategic collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to deliver modern, well-equipped facilities that meet global standards. Stakeholders also aligned with the National Universities Commission to ensure rigorous resource verification processes necessary for accreditation.
A clear implementation timeline was agreed upon, with projections indicating that the Ogun State campus will commence academic activities in the 2026 academic session.
In his remarks, IGP Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to institutional excellence, stressing that the transformation of training institutions remains central to building a modern, responsive, and service-driven police force. He noted that integrating academic depth with operational and tactical training would produce officers capable of addressing contemporary security challenges with professionalism and integrity.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to reposition police education in Nigeria, aligning it with global best practices while strengthening the operational readiness of personnel across the country.
