The Federal Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following growing concerns over recent protests targeting foreigners and reported attacks on Nigerian nationals and their businesses.
According to an official signed statement by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the envoy has been invited to a high-level meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
The statement explained that the engagement is aimed at formally conveying Nigeria’s deep concern over developments in South Africa that could strain the long-standing diplomatic relations between both countries.
It noted that discussions would centre on the ongoing demonstrations by various groups in South Africa, as well as documented cases of alleged maltreatment of Nigerian citizens and destruction of their business interests.
The Ministry acknowledged growing public outrage within Nigeria over the situation but urged citizens to remain calm, assuring that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and welfare of Nigerians residing in South Africa.
