The Federal Government has stepped up its nationwide infrastructure drive with the approval of a major Public-Private Partnership (PPP) road expansion project alongside new measures to enhance security, sustainability, and economic activity across key transport corridors.

According to an official signed statement by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Works, Mohammed A. Ahmed, the development was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the management of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited to the Honourable Minister of Works on Wednesday.

The Honourable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the recently completed Bodo-Bonny Road and Bridges Project in Rivers State. The project, estimated at about ₦150 billion, will be executed under a PPP framework and is designed to incorporate advanced concrete technology to ensure durability with a projected lifespan of 50 to 100 years.

Umahi noted that the նախագ has been slated for presentation before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for formal ratification, in line with the administration’s commitment to transparency and due process in project execution.

As part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s road infrastructure, the government has also approved the installation of solar-powered street lighting and the planting of trees along major highways. These initiatives are expected to improve visibility at night, strengthen security, enhance environmental sustainability, and stimulate economic activities within host communities.

In addition, the Federal Government is set to deploy Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems across key highways, supported by strategically located monitoring centres. The initiative aims to reduce emergency response times to less than 10 minutes, significantly improving road safety and incident management nationwide.

The project design further includes the development of rest areas, relief stations, and service facilities to support effective monitoring and maintenance operations. Contractors handling the projects have been directed to utilise any cost savings to expand the provision of solar lighting and tree planting, reinforcing environmental and operational efficiency goals.

To address logistics challenges and reduce congestion, the government has also emphasised the establishment of truck parking yards at strategic points along the project corridor. Engagements are ongoing with host communities to secure appropriate land for these facilities, ensuring smooth implementation and local participation.

The Minister stressed that the government has set a strict project delivery timeline of not more than 12 months from the date of award, with firm provisions to prevent cost variations, thereby guaranteeing accountability and value for money.

He commended stakeholders involved in the initiative, describing the ongoing infrastructure push under the Renewed Hope Administration as unprecedented in scope and impact. Umahi emphasised that the government’s focus extends beyond road construction to delivering world-class infrastructure capable of driving economic growth, improving safety, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Nigerians.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to leveraging innovative financing models and strategic partnerships to accelerate infrastructure development across the country.

During the visit, the Managing Director of NLNG, Engr. Adeleye Falade, presented a model of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) ship to the Minister, symbolising the company’s commitment to innovation and cleaner energy solutions within Nigeria’s transport and maritime sectors. The meeting also provided an avenue for both parties to explore areas of collaboration in advancing sustainable infrastructure development.
